A Paralympic gold medallist and world record holder visited her grandad with her medals from this year’s games.

Hannah Russell has competed in both London and Rio Paralympic Games and broke the world record to win the women’s S12 100m backstroke and also came first in the S12 50m freestyle.

She also bagged a bronze medal in the S12 100m freestyle.

On Friday night, she visited The Swan Pub, in Park Road, Bushey, with her grandad, Jim Russell, along with her medals she won.

The 20-year-old said: “Rio was really good. I compete in London 2012 but these were my first games away.

“It was something I have been working for all my life. Since 2008 my aim was to compete in 2016.

“Standing on the podium with the crowd cheering and my family there as well is the best moment of the games.”

Miss Russell competed in London 2012 when she was only 16 and still managed to win silver in the S12 400m freestyle and bronze in the S12 100m butterfly.

She said: “When I competed in London it felt familiar but Rio was completely different.

“The culture was very different and it was something I had to adapt to.”

Miss Russell, who has a visual impairment, was inspired to take part in the Paralympics after watching the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and she began asking her family about training.

She said: “After watching the likes of Rebecca Adlington compete I knew I wanted to be there.

“I have always been swimming from a young age and when I was about 7 or 8 my teacher at school asked us all to draw a picture of what we wanted to be when we were older.

“I drew myself swimming and it just shows that anything is achievable.”
