A golf club has been forced to sell its clubhouse to a developer due to lack of members.

Bushey Hall Golf Club, in Bushey Hall Drive, has been struggling with members for many years and now it has sold its clubhouse to Preston Bennett, a Stanmore-developer, to build a three-storey block of flats.

Matthew Hilder, 52, of Brambling Close, in Bushey, is objecting the demolition.

He said: “I do not mind the fact the golf club has put in a planning application to build flats because the number of members has dropped.

“But I am objecting to the height of it. The application is not in-keeping with the local area.

“I am not against anything being built but this is just the wrong application.

“It just seems very wrong to change a two storey building into a four storey block of flats.”

The application, submitted to Hertsmere Borough Council’s planning committee, plans to demolish the clubhouse, former print works, ProShop and maintenance buildings.

A new single storey golf clubhouse with basement facilities and a three storey with roof level accommodation residential building with 31 self-contained residential units with underground car parking.

Mr Hilder said: “I think it is inevitable more and more buildings are being built in Watford and Bushey.

“I just do not understand why they think they can put something up.

“There have been some buildings which follow the same character of the area but this one does not.”

With a planning application to demolish a clubhouse Mr Hilder is not concerned about the green land and he believes it will be enhanced.

The last time Mr Hilder was able to make a comment was on September 15 but he is not sure whether the application will be discussed at a planning meeting.

Bushey Hall Golf Club has been approached for a comment.
