Three men are appearing before court after an 19-year-old was thrown from a first floor balcony during his birthday celebrations.

Three men from Watford were arrested on suspicion of grievous and actual bodily harm around 4.30am on Tuesday.

Adnan Mustafa, 21, of St Georges Road, Akil Iqbal, 18, of Harris Road, and Waleea Rasool, 18, of Raven Close, appeared before Hatfield Remand Court today (Thursday).

The 19-year-old victim sustained head injuries and was taken to St Mary's Hospital, London, by paramedics where he remains in a serious condition.

Police and forensics were called to Jenny's Cafe in St Albans Road in Watford at around 1.54am on Tuesday morning.

Neighbours and businesses near to where the incident happened have spoken about what they saw and heard during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Sahid Ali, owner of Day 1 Newsagents, said: “My window was open and at around 1.40am nothing was there. I did not see anything.

“I heard an argument happening between a few men but that is normal in St Albans Road as we have a few pubs along here.

“The police then came but sometimes they come down the road anyway. For some reason I did not think to look out of my window.

“Police have said the boy is in a critical condition. It is horrible because of his age.”

The man was found to be lying in road at the junction with Victoria Road with a serious head injury.

The road was closed off to allow investigations to take place at the scene.

Harry Patel, owner of Kays Newsagents, said: “I opened my business at 5.30am and on Tuesday morning the police had closed the road.

“They did not let us out of our shop because they were doing forensics on the road.

“After 30 minutes police opened the road and allowed us to start our business.”

An eyewitness told the Observer the victim was celebrating his 19th birthday and this incident has made many people in the town concerned about their safety.

Angela Warren said: "Watford is a sad dangerous place to live these days. I am thinking about moving away."
