Remember when you could buy a cheeseburger from Wimpy on Rickmansworth High Street for 21p? Ever spot Wham in Long Island Exchange? Did your mum and dad treat you to a knickerbocker glory in Café Suisse?

We asked Observer readers what places they miss the most in the area and here is what they told us...

Trevor Stubbs, who has lived in Rickmansworth all his life, said: “A very popular place, if I remember the name correctly, was theTonibell Bar.

"I believe this was one of the the first burger bars in Rickmansworth. It was situated where the small, independent travel agency is in the high street.

"When you walked in it had a bar and stools on the right and opposite was the serving counter and cooking facilities.

"Then as you walked up the steps there were tables where you could sit and order your meal.”

Liz Hall said: “Cafe Suisse in Church Street, Rickmansworth, was a favourite of mine; a stone-clad relic of the 1960s. It’s where I had my first knickerbockerglory.

“There were twee pictures of Switzerland inside and sets of old skis on the wall. It was like nowhere else you’ve ever been.”

Ruth Hambleton and Lynn Fraser’s favourite spot was Long Island Exchange in Victoria Road, Rickmansworth.

Lynn said: “Wham used to go into Long Island. We were so impressed.”

Michael Louvieris said Natalia’s in Green Lane, Northwood, was a particular favourite of his.

He said: “Natalia’s was a fantastic Greek and continental restaurant that supplied the area with excellent cuisine and atmosphere for nearly 20 years.”

Caroline Streeter says she misses Poppins restaurant in High Street, Watford.

She said: “I miss Poppins; their cherry pancakes were the best. I visited one in Chesham a few weeks ago and went in for a walk down memory lane. It didn’t disappoint, the cherry pancakes were just as good.”

A lot of readers said they missed Ponderosa from Lower High Street, in Watford.

Trevor Pritchard said: “Ponderosa, Ponderosa, Ponderosa…no contest., It was simply awesome.”

Isabelle Holloway agreed saying: “Ponderosa gets my vote.”

Helen Nicell also misses Le Caprice, in St Albans Road.

She said: “We always went there for special occasions; you had a meal and then went to the disco after. I had my hen night there in 1982.”

Other place’s people missed were The Carousel, Burgerville, Marcello’s, The Chequers and the 92 Bar.
