May I through the auspices of your newspaper have a few moans concerning Network Rail’s ‘cavalier attitude’ towards the felling of trees and shrubs on the Euston-Watford rail line (Julie Murray and Councillor Rabi Martins, WO September 30).

I can only concur with their observations. Not only is it disruptive to animal biodiversity but it is now creating noise and visual pollution through the felling of mature trees along the line, especially in residential areas like Carpenders Park, Bushey, Hatch End, etc.

Which brings me to flooding in areas such as the aforementioned. For instance in Carpenders Park not only trees but also front gardens are being dug up for car parks along Alva Way – 92 per cent of front gardens have vanished thereby contributing to flooding at the bottom of By The Wood.

I notice that Mr Harrington wants a consultation on flooding in the Watford area. Well he does not have to look or consult so far.

I have had a letter recently from Network Rail explaining that incidents caused by vegetation etc cost the railway £100m. Well pull the other one, who gets this astonishing figure?

The constant refrain most mornings on Euston-Watford line is ‘the next train on platform two is the delayed 7.54am to Watford’.

If they were surgeons we would all be dead. They only run three trains an hour and cannot be on time no matter what type of statistics they try to blind us with.

Some years ago they tried to run six to nine trains an hour, Bakerloo line included, and were always on time no matter what. And all they needed was a man with a green flag; so much for technology.

Finally as we approach Diwali and fireworks night may I on behalf of wildlife and nature ask participants to try and keep noise levels to a tolerable degree when some of the explosions and bombardment are absolutely intimidating. Can you imagine what it is like for creatures trying to rest up in the night?
