A number of unaccompanied refugee children from the infamous “jungle” camp in Calais have been rehomed in Hertfordshire.
Ten girls from Ethiopia and Eritrea were placed with foster carers across the county within hours of arriving in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The girls arrived in the UK under the “Dubs amendment” rules, which allow vulnerable children to seek refuge in Britain.
Councillor Richard Roberts, responsible for children’s services at Hertfordshire County Council, said: “I’d like to express my sincere thanks to our foster carers and staff, who were on standby all night.
“They showed real compassion, kindness and commitment in what were very trying circumstances.”
With French authorities clearing the camp from today (Monday), Hertfordshire, along with all other local authorities, was asked by the Government to make available a small number of foster placements to receive children from the camp.
