A woman died after accidentally setting her house on fire with a candle.

Dhanuben Parmer, 91, was found dead at her terraced house in Lebanon Close earlier this month.

Firefighters were called at around 11am on Friday, October 7 after neighbours reported seeing smoke billowing from the house.

Witnesses said neighbours forced open the front door but were unable to get to the woman because of the smoke.

Station commander at Watford Fire Station Jim Moran said: "Despite the prompt actions of neighbours who discovered the fire, and the rapid response of firefighters who attended the incident, we were sadly unable to save the occupier.

"Our thoughts go out to family and friends of the occupier at this time."

District commander Jon Horastead added: "With this season’s festivals and celebrations nearly upon us, including Diwali at the end of October, we would like to remind everyone that candles are still a major cause of fire in the home.

"While we don’t want to dampen spirits, it is vital that people take the appropriate safety precautions.

"This week is Candle Safety Week, and more information on candle safety can be found at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/firesafety or from your local fire station."
