An annual dog walk in honour of three brave heroes who died in Afghanistan is due to take place next month.

Local lads Cpt Tom Sawyer, Cpl Chris Harrison and Pte Tom Lake were killed between 2009 and 2011 while on tours with the British Army.

Organised by their parents, the sixth annual Honour Dog Walk will set off from Watford Town Hall at noon on Sunday, November 6, travelling through Cassiobury Park before arriving back at the hall around two hours later.

“We started the Honour Dog Walk in the beginning because we wanted to do something to keep the memory of our sons alive, and both our Tom and Chris left behind much loved dogs so it seemed the perfect combination. In fact their dogs join us on every walk,” said Cpt Sawyer’s mum Sue.

“We know too that our boys would have been extremely pleased that their mutual love of dogs helps raise not only funds but also awareness of the Royal British Legion and its work.

“Come wind, rain or shine, the walk has always taken place - though I must admit we have usually been extremely lucky with the weather, but even the rain hasn't been able to dampen our enthusiasm.

“It’s always fun to see the looks of surprise on the faces of people who have no idea what is going on when we walk through Cassiobury Park, and it is always very heart-warming when we meet very generous people who, once they know what we are doing and why, ask if they can put a donation into one of our buckets.

“We welcome any walkers and poppy fund supporters to take part who would like to participate with or without dogs. It is always really lovely when new walkers join us, whether they knew the lads or not, just because they want to show their support.  Everyone is always made very welcome.”

Following the walk, the Croxley Green branch of the Royal British Legion is welcoming participants back to its base for some warming refreshments.

All proceeds from the event go to the poppy appeal – a cause of great importance for the parents of the departed soldiers

The event usually attracts around 50 walkers and their dogs, and raises around £1,500 for the poppy appeal in remembrance season.
