People of Watford like to be given the chance to be courageous; tell us something is too hot to handle and we rise to the challenge and say: “Bring it on”.

And now brave food lovers can head to Morrisons, in Ascot Road, to try and eat the world’s spiciest pizza. The supermarket chain claims it has made tongues bleed and is stronger than tear gas.

Aptly named Hotter than Hell, the pizza has more than 200 Naga chillies on it – one of the world’s hottest chillies.

The pizza is so hot that workers in the store had to wear safety goggles, latex gloves and aprons when making it, and warning notices and caution tape are wrapped around the pizza, telling customers about the potential danger if eaten or handled incorrectly.

Mike Ward, store manager at Morrisons Watford, said: “A few of our customers who are chilli fans have been telling us that they don’t get the extreme heat they’re after when eating regular pizzas, so we thought we’d make something with more of a kick.”

“We’ve worked with our British chilli grower to grow these extreme heat chillies and our pizza counter staff are now on standby in their protective gear to make the pizzas up.”

The Naga chilli has a Scoville rating of up to 1 million – 200 times spicier than Tabasco sauce, 200 times hotter than a Jalapeno and seven times fierier than a Vindaloo.

Some Naga chillies are hotter than pepper spray and others have been used to develop tear gas hand grenades.

To make the pizza even more spicy, Morrisons added jalapeno pepperoni, a chilli-cheese crumb, jalapenos and crushed chillies.

Those who take on the challenge can first expect the tongue to go numb and talking to become difficult. Then a burning sensation will start in the mouth and continue down the throat, whilst eyes and nose will start to run. Most people will become hot and sweaty.

The sensation will last for 15 minutes, after which some people may feel euphoric as hot chillies are known to generate an endorphin rush.

The pizza is available from October 28.
