Good news for our hospital and our town.

On Wednesday the High Court gave the go-ahead for the Farm Terrace site to be used for the Health Campus scheme – including the expansion of Watford General Hospital.

This is good news for our hospital and good news for our town.

I have always believed that Watford and South West Herts deserve a first class hospital, and I have taken difficult decisions to make that possible – including providing land for the hospital to expand and constructing a new road to improve access and speed up ambulance journeys to A&E.

The High Court’s judgement vindicates the decisions we have made to ensure acute hospital services are retained in Watford.

With the NHS now committed to developing Watford General they will have the land they need to expand the hospital to ensure it can cope with future demands.

The Health Campus is a once in a lifetime opportunity to secure the future of Watford General Hospital and unlock acres of derelict land to provide much needed homes, jobs and new public green spaces.

Importantly, by building on this derelict former industrial land, we can protect existing communities from overdevelopment too.

Every council in the land is obliged by law to build more housing.

Creating a new community on disused brownfield land allows us to meet our Government requirement to provide more homes and tackle the housing crisis while at the same time ensuring we protect the character of our town’s communities, parks and playing fields for good.

With the new road to the hospital, Thomas Sawyer Way, opening on November 16, the Metropolitan Line extension underway and workers building the first new business zone, this exciting development for our town is taking shape.

The project has always been driven by the need to modernise and expand Watford General Hospital – that’s why we called it the Health Campus in the first place.

We can now look forward to seeing these plans realised after years of delays.
