Two Watford councillors want to improve safety on a dangerous stretch of road which has seen a rising number of crashes recently.

Woodside and Stanborough councillors Steve Cavinder and Tim Williams have launched a campaign to improve road safety on the problematic stretch of the A405 between Woodside Leisure Park and St Albans Road.

The road has a 40mph limit but councillors Cavinder and Williams say this is often ignored by motorists, putting both the drivers and pedestrians at risk.

As a result, the councillors are calling on the highways authority at Hertfordshire County Council to make improvements to the road between the Leavesden Green interchange and St Albans Road, including a pedestrian crossing point at Woodside Leisure Park, improvements to the junction with Greenwood Drive, and increased speed enforcement along the length of the route.

Cllr Williams said: “Speeding is a real problem on this stretch, there are 50mph and 40mph limits on this road but they are widely ignored which is putting motorists and pedestrian at risk every single day.

“Junctions like Greenwood Drive are a particular concern. We need to see real improvements and enforcement to stop more serious accidents occurring.”

Cllr Cavinder added: “There have been several accidents on this busy stretch of the A405 and many more near misses. Being so close to the leisure park and local schools, it’s vital that we do all we can to protect pedestrians.”

Hertfordshire County Council Muireann Banerjee said: “Road safety is of paramount importance to Hertfordshire County Council and we are happy to hear suggestions from Hertfordshire residents about improvements that can be made to roads in their area.

“The county council prioritises funding for highway safety to schemes which have the greatest potential to reduce the number and severity of collisions occurring.”
