MR MICHAEL Delaney’s article of October 21 in the Watford Observer refers to the “Devil in detail” regarding the implications for employers and employees concerning Brexit (Watford Observer, October 21).

To further the analogy, the devil is surely very pleased knowing the potential for ever increasing damning consequences, There has been minimal detail by our government but we are already feeling the aftershock of our proposed exit from the EU. Food prices are starting to rise, given the devaluation of our currency. All imported goods will cost more, including many household items and clothing given that we have a minimal manufacturing base.

Banks and many companies are threatening to relocate their head offices abroad once Brexit is ignited, with the loss of many jobs.

There will be less scope for people to take holidays abroad and many young people in particular will lack the experience of enlightened foreign travel.

The grandiose claim that coming out of the EU will free money for the NHS has been dealt a serious realistic blow by Prime Minister Theresa May when she states no more money is to be allocated to our National Health Service.

We have learnt that Boris Johnson only a few days prior to coming out to support Brexit had written an article extolling the importance of staying in the EU. He and many of his cohorts, with their wealth, are unlikely to be affected by what is to come in the future.

Brexit clearly has been built on myths, the most stupefying unreality being that somehow we can become powerful again in a global market.

Whilst we may initially employ many EU laws, including workers’ rights, into our legal system they will eventually be eroded as we discover we simply cannot compete in the New World.

It is being stated now, by economists, that the poorest in society will suffer the most because of Brexit. Unemployment is bound to rise.

It appears from analysis of the referendum vote that many people sought to make a statement about the political elite, but in so doing they are inevitably harming themselves economically.

The devil will most certainly be laughing at the detail of such a misdirected and ultimately unjustified decision to leave the European Union.
