A man was taken to hospital with severe burns after his car caught the fire.
Police were called to Stephenson Way, in Watford, at 7.22pm by the fire service to reports of a silver Peugeot 307 on fire.
The driver, a 30 year old man, suffered serious burns and was taken to Watford General Hospital but has now been transferred to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
Sergeant Karl McDermott, of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire road policing unit said: "It is believed the car had collided with a barrier on the M1 northbound around junction 4 at 7.10pm last night and then travelled to Stephenson Way where it caught fire."
Part of Stephenson Way was closed eastbound and the M1 northbound between junction 1 and 4 was also closed.
Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
