Two mums are appealing for the council to improve safety on a notorious stretch of road which has seen a rising number of crashes recently.

Woodside residents Sarah Hayes and Estella Willems are “deeply concerned” by the spate of high-speed collisions on the stretch of the A405 between Woodside Leisure Park and St Albans Road.

“It’s absolutely vital that the council doesn’t stop with the work it’s already done to end dangerous speeding on the A405 but continues to work to reduce the risk to drivers, residents and schoolchildren who use our roads every day,” said Ms Hayes.

The pair have started a petition calling for local county councillor Derek Scudder to use his highways locality budget to improve safety on the road.

“There’s been some great work done already but hopefully our petition will help ensure that the A405 returns to the safe and essential road that Watford and Hertfordshire needs,” added Mrs Willems.

Despite Cllr Scudder stating safety improvements on the road had his “full backing”, he said there was no money left in his highways budget for this year, with a large chunk of the following year’s already committed to the 2017-18 county budget.

However he and councillors Tim Williams and Steve Cavinder, who had previously called for his help to make safety improvements on the road, will bring the concerns of residents to the highways panel at Hertfordshire County Council in February.

“The safety unit will do an investigation and come up with ideas to solve the problems on the road,” said Cllr Scudder.

“We tried to get lights near the roundabout at the cinema before but the county always refused. It will be very expensive but we think it is necessary.”

Among the councillors requests are a pedestrian crossing point at Woodside Leisure Park, improvements to the junction with Greenwood Drive, and increased speed enforcement along the length of the route.

Cllr Williams said: “Speeding is a real problem on this stretch, there are 50mph and 40mph limits on this road but they are widely ignored which is putting motorists and pedestrian at risk every single day.

“Junctions like Greenwood Drive are a particular concern. We need to see real improvements and enforcement to stop more serious accidents occurring.”
