It's been a funny old 18-months for Yellow Comedy organiser Andrew Carberry. He's staged 74 gigs featuring 214 acts at four different venues in Watford - Reason Cafe, The Pump House, Watford Museum and Attico Arts Centre, "which is no longer there unfortunately,", he tells me and in the next few weeks he's staging not one but two comedy competitions.

On the road to mirth, microphones have been lost, a promotional banner has worn out and they've even had their charity buckets stolen.

The Yellow army, however marches on with expansion across the length and breadth of Hertfordshire into LJs Coffee House in Oxhey, Kitchen in Croxley Green, Perk Coffee in Carpenders Park, Harrow's Trinity Bar, plus dates in London including a one-off gig at Angel Hands charity in Wealdstone, which aims to be a positive space for creative events.

Andrew hand-picks his venues carefully.  "I've gone for coffee shops and theatres because it's a nicer ambience," he says. "Sometimes the owners can say what kind of comedians they like for example Neil who runs Reason asked me to book in a particular comedian and I've booked her at other places but not here yet, so I'll rotate some people around and get her to come down in the New Year."

It's a constant juggling act for the comic/MC/promoter who turns 38 next Friday while performing a rare gig at LJs Coffee House.  Andrew's stand up gigs are few and far between because as well as arranging several comedy nights a month, he also is one-sixth of comedy sketch troupe The Bosun's Delight who stormed Camden, Bedford and the Henley Fringe this summer with their dark and delectable material.  "We formed in March 2015 and have written around 150 different sketches and performed 75 so far," says the Watford born and bred funnyman who only graduated from an introduction to stand up course two years ago. "I am not sure anyone shares my sense of humour although one my fellow members of the Bosun's Delight, Jack Latham has similar feelings on the darker comedy as I do."

Andrew aims to give a platform to at least three new acts per show which he draws from the London comedy circuit, when we meet an act has just fallen through as they'd had a better offer, which just goes to prove Andrew's sense of humour is on the right track.

"What we're trying to do is build from the bottom and then people get better as time goes on and eventually they get snapped up so you need to find the next lot of talent, which is why I try and bring in three or four acts every show because even the acts I have now are much in demand, like Yuriko Kotani who we had on our second show, she won the BBC Radio New Comedy Award competition last year. A lot of our acts we book them and they get better offers elsewhere and there's no way I can compete so what I kind of do is churn up as much quality as I can."

Quickfire Q&A with Andrew Carberry: What's the weirdest place you've ever seen a gig?

A barn in a pub beer garden on the hottest day of the year last summer. Got very sticky.

What's the quirkiest place you've staged a gig?

It was within two separate rooms at Watford museum. Lovely little venue in the heart of this great town.

When was the last time out laughed out loud?

A couple of days ago sat at home watching Amy Schumers live show at the Hammersmith Apollo on Comedy Central. Very funny lady.

What's your favourite cracker joke?  How do you start a flea race? One two flea!

Who are the funniest people on the stand up circuit?

At the top end there's Bec Hill, Nathan Cassidy, Jim Smallman, Brendan Burns, Raymond and Mr Timpkins and Steve Best.

And on TV?  Tim Vine, Paul Chowdry, Doug Stanhope, Jimeoin, Tiffany Stephenson, Romesh Romangathan and Doc Brown.
