MP DAVID GAUKE has criticised Government policy on the provision of gipsy and traveller sites.

The East of England Regional Assembly is currently consulting on the provision of additional pitches for travellers' caravans in Dacorum and Three Rivers.

An independent report, commissioned by district councils in south west Hertfordshire, has identified a number of specific potential sites in the area which may be used as sites - including Croxley, Loudwater, Berkhamsted, Tring, Bovingdon and Flaunden.

Speaking after a Commons debate yesterday, Mr Gauke said: "The Government is using the Regional Assembly to impose additional gipsy and traveller sites in Hertfordshire against the wishes of local people.

"It looks likely that the boundaries of the Green Belt will be redrawn in order to accommodate these sites.

"There is clearly very great demand for housing in Hertfordshire from the population as a whole but the Government has not produced any evidence that there is a need for more gypsy sites in South West Hertfordshire."
