Young students celebrated the end of a special study scheme which saw them gain practical experience in areas such as business, sport and leisure and tourism.

An awards ceremony was held last Tuesday to celebrate the end of a year long collaboration between local pupils and West Herts College.

West Herts College has strong links with many local secondary schools, including Bushey Hall, Falconer, Garston Manor, Queens', Rickmansworth, St Michaels and Westfield.

The college works closely with these schools to offer 14 to 16 year olds the option of studying one day a week at college for a qualification in a range of vocational subjects, helping them prepare for further studying and future employment.

Courses are offered in care and early years, construction, electrical installation, hairdressing, health and social vare, IT, catering, motor vehicle engineering, performance skills, photography and video design, sales and business enterprise, sport and leisure, travel and tourism and uniformed services.

The college facilities mean teaching is provided in a setting that matches a real-life working environment wherever possible. For example, young people choosing to study in the Junior Catering Academy have the opportunity to work in fully-working kitchens and Cassio's Restaurant, which is open to the public.
