Miles Shinkwin knows exactly what to expect when he comes up against old foe Joel McIntyre for the BBBofC English light heavyweight title in Portsmouth.

The pair will meet for the second time in their brief professional careers tomorrow night, with the Bushey fighter the only man to have beaten him in the ring to date.

Their previous fight came for the Southern Area title in the same weight category, and after a close fight, saw Shinwkin named victor on points.

The Bushey fighter has had a quiet year after his original fight with Tom Baker, for the vacant belt he will hope to win, was cancelled ahead of a scheduled October bout.

“I’m expecting the same kind of fight as last time,” he told the Observer. “I think he will come forward and try to pick up the pace, because he blamed a lack of urgency on his defeat last time.

“You can’t change drastically as a fighter, so I’ll know his style.”

In a quiet year, during which Shinkwin has only fought twice previously, tomorrow will be the second time he has looked to claim the English title – after suffering his only defeat in his last attempt, to Manchester’s Hosea Burton back in February.

He said: “It was a horrible feeling losing, and I would like to say I have forgotten about it, but I haven’t.

“I don’t want to feel like that again. I believe my talent merits higher rewards than this title, so to lose would be disastrous.

“But talent doesn’t always get rewards if you don’t work hard enough; I know I do, though.”

Ahead of the cancelled Baker fight, Shinkwin said he would retire he he lost - but is not making any promises this time around.

He said: “I could get cut and stopped and I wouldn’t retire because of that. But I am realistic, and if I lost badly that would more than likely be it.”
