Watford have been putting in extra hours on the training pitch to avoid adding to the 10 goals they have already conceded from corners this season, Walter Mazzarri has confirmed.

The Hornets shipped another goal to Jonny Evans' header last weekend at West Brom, taking their tally to eight from just 14 Premier League games played this season.

Crosses have been a particular problem for the Hornets both in open play and from set pieces, but while Mazzarri admitted the extra work had gone in, he questioned the statistics behind the issue.

He said: "I would like to verify this statistic - we need to evaluate. Stastics need to be seen in different ways, whether they are from corners, free-kicks or anything else.

"I agree we have been conceding too many goals from corner kicks, which we have been working on all week.

"We have also been working on something we did well against West Brom, not allowing the opposition many opportunities to score."

Watford adopted zonal marking from set pieces for the trip to The Hawthorns last week, and Mazzarri said the move had been prompted by the Hornets' injury crisis at the back.

He said: "I decided to mark zonally in the last game because we have been missing many important defenders who can jump a lot, and in the Premier League if you mark men, you need big defenders who can do that.

"This is the solution we decided to adopt, but this same solution can be changed, but I will decide depending on who will play and what players I have available."
