More than 1,600 Watford residents have called for Watford train stations to be included in the Transport for London zoning system to reduce fares for commuters.

Liberal Democrat councillors believe now is the time for TfL to look at including all Watford stations in the same fare zone as places such as Epping and Upminster which are in zone 6 despite being further away from Charing Cross.

Buoyed by 1,600 signatures collected in favour of the proposal, elected Mayor Dorothy Thornhill has written to TfL asking them to consider re-zoning Watford’s railway stations, a move which could save commuters nearly £100 per month.

Mayor Thornhill said: "Watford residents get a raw deal from Travelcard zoning.

“Epping residents have the same journey length as from Watford, yet Epping is in zone 6 while Watford Junction is in a special category beyond zone 9.

“That makes a huge difference to fares – as much as £97.50 more for a monthly Travelcard for Watford Junction travellers."

Nascot councillor Mark Hofman added: "Watford residents are getting a raw deal, and I'm grateful that Dorothy is taking on this huge issue for everyone in Nascot and throughout our town.

“Passengers from Watford Junction, Watford tube station, Watford High Street and Bushey are paying more than they should. It’s time TfL and the Mayor of London gave fair fares for Watford.”
