“Watford's historic buildings are, slowly and steadily, being destroyed.”

These are the words of warning from residents opposed to the demolition of listed Victorian buildings in the town centre.

TJX Europe, which operates TK Maxx, is hoping to expand its European headquarters that is based on Clarendon Road – but this means demolishing two villas that were built in 1865.

When they were built, Clarendon Road was filled with similar houses. But over the years, the rest of the villas have been knocked down and replaced with office blocks and hotels, and 73 and 75 Clarendon Road are the only ones remaining.

Many residents have expressed their concern in a Facebook group, Watford Memories and History, and a petition that was started less than three hours ago, has already received more than 20 signatures.

It says: “In an area that has been aggressively developed, the villas are one of the few reminders of Watford's historic past - something we are now in danger of losing - and the time to act is now.

“Developers are now justifying the demolition of these buildings on the basis that the few that remain ‘no longer represent the character of the area’.

“73 and 75 Clarendon Road are the only reminders of what was once here and we are seeking to prevent the demolition so these buildings can continue to be enjoyed for many more years to come.”

Writing in the Facebook group, Shiraz Peer said: “They shouldn’t be allowed to demolish these two iconic buildings,” and Malcom Wallis commented: “Another bit of delightful old Watford to be bulldozed. Soon there will be very little left worth saving.”

Barry Wyman added: “So there go the last two in Clarendon Road, replaced by a monstrosity, no doubt…story of Watford over the last 40-50 years.”

Due to their architectural and historical importance, Watford Borough Council has designated the villas as locally listed. And while local listing provides no additional planning control, it is considered when determining the outcome of a planning application.

As part of the proposals, a four-storey office building at 77 Clarendon Road will also have to be demolished.

According to TJX Europe’s public consultation advert, the new building “will seek to provide a modern and attractive welcome to Watford, and an enhanced experience for local residents and pedestrians passing the site”.

Before TJX Europe submits a formal planning application, it is holding a public consultation at the Clarendon Road Holiday Inn on Friday January 20, between 3pm and 8pm, and Saturday January 21, between 10am and 2pm.

TJX Europe was contacted for a comment but had not responded when the paper went to print.
