Tests will be carried out to decide whether restrictions on a quiet street should be extended to deter parents from parking poorly when picking up their children from school.

Rose Gardens resident Stuart Taylor started a petition to stop parents whose children attend the nearby Laurence Haines Primary School from parking on pavements or blocking driveways on the cul-de-sac during the school run.

He said selfish parking often forced young children and mothers with pushchairs into the road, a move which he said could cause a fatal accident.

“The problem is escalating and getting worse,” he told the cabinet at Watford Borough Council meeting at the Town Hall on Monday evening.

“I am shocked and horrified. Sometimes they even park on people’s gardens.”

Mr Taylor, who has two young children himself, is worried that they and his wife Celeste could be involved in an accident if something is not done to prevent poor parking.

Presenting his petition to the councillors, Mr Taylor called for blanket parking restrictions to be implemented during peak times – between 8.30am and 9.30am, and later between 3pm and 4pm – a move which he says is backed by the majority of Rose Gardens residents.

Elected Mayor Dorothy Thornhill argued that all schools in Watford had parking issues but agreed to send a council officer down to assess the situation and come up with a solution.

“We want protection for residents so we need to look at what’s going on there,” she said.
