Calls to improve safety on a notorious stretch of road have received a significant boost with Hertfordshire County Council’s highways panel promising to explore potential options.

One short section of the A405 in particular has become an accident blackspot in recent years, with a number of high-speed collisions injuring motorists and pedestrians alike.

Woodside councillor Steve Cavinder presented a petition to the highways panel calling for safety improvements, drawing their attention to the high volume of crashes.

He also voiced concerns about the safety of pedestrians in the area, citing the road’s close proximity to schools, housing estates, and a cinema complex.

Less than 24 hours after he presented the petition, another crash took place on the A405.

Stanborough Councillor Tim Williams, who helped launch the campaign, said: “The support from the local community has been outstanding, and it’s clear that there is a real desire locally to urgently cut speeding on this busy road.

“Our campaign has now made real progress. Having been unanimously endorsed by Watford borough councillors last month, it is brilliant news that the Hertfordshire highways panel are taking this matter so seriously. I look forward to seeing their recommendations for making this road safer for both drivers and pedestrians.

“Less than 24 hours after presenting the petition, another traffic accident occurred on this stretch of the A405. This is sadly a regular occurrence on this road. Doing nothing really isn’t an option anymore, and I look forward to hearing the recommendations.”

Cllr Williams and his colleagues will be lobbying the county council to fund a pedestrian crossing outside the cinema complex, which could be built as soon as 2018.

The highways panel has also asked council officers to work with local county councillor Derek Scudder to investigate potential solutions.
