We likely all grew up being told by our parents and our schools that you should help the needy.

In 2016 our MP, Richard Harrington, joined by hundreds of his Conservative colleagues voted against an amendment to allow 3,000 unaccompanied child refugees to come to Britain.

Yesterday that scheme was revoked and of the children we promised to take only 350 have arrived. It’s expected we will take a further 150 before the scheme formally ends.

Harrington should know full well the sheer scale of the humanitarian crisis in Syria – he served under David Cameron as a minister on Syrian refugees.

How, then, can he justify voting down this amendment and how can his Government, only months later, backtrack on something as fundamental as looking after children?

Yesterday’s announcement from the Government shamed me. We have our problems to deal with here in Britain but we are one of the most influential and powerful countries in the world – not following through on our humanitarian commitments sends the worst of all signals and is a betrayal of the British values I know and feel.
