A stretch of road riddled with potholes is being repeatedly ignored for repair works according to one councillor.

County councillor Nigel Bell said the length of Tolpits Lane near Holywell School is dotted with the “dangerous” craters which he has brought up numerous times with Hertfordshire County Council’s highways department.

He and nearby resident Andrew Moore are annoyed that the potholes on the road are being logged as faults with the highways department, only to be told that they are not considered a priority.

In other cases, Councillor Bell says inadequate quick fixes are being carried out instead of proper repair work, resulting in the fault resurfacing after a short time.

Cllr Bell said: “Mr Moore, like many residents and myself, are fed being told by Highways that they are carrying out works when they are not done or a quick job is done, which as in this case comes away after a few days.

“It is vital Hertfordshire Highways acts quicker on an important road into and out of Watford like Tolpits Lane.”

Kevin Carrol, divisional manager for council contractor Ringway, said: "All potholes reported to us are assessed. We can confirm that following recent reports concerning the condition of the road surface, Tolpits Lane in Watford was inspected.

"The inspection did identify a couple of areas along the road that meet the county council's guidelines for urgent repair and have been scheduled. The repair guidelines focus repair works on the most dangerous defects as a priority.

"We will continue to monitor the condition of this road through our routine safety inspection regime."
