A woman who was threatened by a meat cleaver-wielding man in a secluded underpass has called for the installation of CCTV cameras to deter potential attackers.

Stacey Marie Miller and her young son were walking through the underpass near Cow Lane one evening in February when they were approached by a man who seemed drunk and bombarded them with death threats.

The 33-year-old was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill but, due to a lack of evidence, was released with no further action taken.

Ms Miller is now calling for CCTV cameras to be installed in the underpass to prevent a repeat occurrence.

“The subway should have CCTV. When you are in that subway and someone wants to attack you, there is no way out,” she said.

“He seems to be getting away with what he’s done. I had my child with me and he was really scared.”

Residents reported seeing armed police on the Meriden estate that evening. Another eyewitness said roads in the area were closed by police.

Ms Miller claims three other people were intimidated by the man that evening but were too scared to make a statement to police.

She added: “If this guy is constantly causing problems in the high rises, how many people are in danger? Residents are really upset by it all.”

Watford Borough Council said it had previously investigated the possibility of installing CCTV in the subway but ruled it out as “the architectural design of this subway doesn’t enable us to provide effective CCTV coverage”.

The council added: “We’re working alongside the police to carry out regular patrols in the area and address any reported issues.”
