Anthony Joshua received a ‘good luck’ message from Sir Elton John just hours before he stepped into the ring at Wembley.

And as his global profile soars, TV celebrity chat shows on both sides of the Atlantic are desperate to have the boxing sensation on their sofas.

Rocket man Elton is the former chairman of Watford FC.

And the young boxer - who grew up in the Meriden estate - was stunned when he got in touch on the eve of the fight with Wladimir Klitschko.

He had already received a video message of support from legendary American rapper Dr Dre when he got a call from British pop royalty.

Anthony said: “We spoke to Elton John as well before the fight. He sent a message, saying he would like to speak to me. He’s a Watford man.

“That felt surreal, Elton John wanting to talk to me. He’s following boxing, not just me.

“He’s had to cancel some shows because he’s been ill, but he was going to buy the pay-per-view and watch it. I started laughing when he said that and said ‘no illegal streams I hope!’.”

Joshua, 27, said he had hoped to one day fight at Watford’s Vicarage Road stadium.

But he admits the reaction to his victory in front of 90,000 ecstatic fans at Wembley has all but dashed that dream.

Some of the world’s iconic arenas, including New York’s Madison Square Garden, are now on his radar.

And the champ is taking it all in his stride. “I can see the headlines now ‘Joshua turns his back on Watford!’ “ he laughed.

His promoter Eddie Hearn said he would to see Joshua fight in New York, on the same stage where so many boxing greats have appeared, including Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Lennox Lewis, Joe Calzaghe, Roberto Duran, Jake LaMotta, Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano.

He believes Joshua could one day be earning up to £50million per fight.

And his commercial manager Freddie Cunningham said several TV chat shows are desperate to have Anthony as a guest.

Just hours after his victory, which earned him an estimated £15million, Joshua admitted he needed to settle a £120 bill at his local launderette.
