A concerned father says he is worried he did not see a single policeman patrolling in Watford today, despite the terror threat level being raised to its highest point in 10 years.

Matthew Randall, who moved to Garston from London 20 years ago, attended a dentist appointment before popping in to West Herts College to see his daughter’s work, spending around three hours in town altogether.

He said he was shocked not to see a single policeman on foot or in a vehicle during his visit, especially considering the threat level has been raised following Monday’s terrorist attack in Manchester to indicate another strike could be imminent.

“I was thinking to myself that anyone could do anything. You would think with this heightened threat there would be some presence but there was no-one. Not a sausage,” he said.

Watford Observer:

“I think at the college I would have a security man on the door, and maybe a few police walking about the street and in the intu, for law and order as well as reassurance.

“Police are everywhere in London today. I feel they’ve taken staff into London from the surrounding forces. I’m just surprised. I thought I would have seen some police about today.”

However Hertfordshire Constabulary said policing levels in the county had so far not been reduced to bolster numbers in the capital.

A spokesperson said: “Like other forces across the country, Hertfordshire Constabulary is reviewing its operational response plans following the raising of the UK terror threat level to critical.

“There are considerable operational implications to such a move for the police service as you would expect and a dedicated strategic response group has been established to assess what the announcement means for Hertfordshire.

“At this moment in time, local day to day policing levels are not affected but the situation is being continuously reviewed and there will be a heightened police presence if required.”
