Watford Mencap’s charity shop is closing after its inability to turn a profit was deemed unsustainable.

The charity – which works with people with learning disabilities, and their families and carers – has reluctantly decided to close the St Albans Road store, which has not been making a profit “for some time” despite a relaunch last year.

Fundraising manager Carol Tunstall said they were disappointed to have to close the shop but had plans for fresh fundraising ventures in the near future.

“As a local charity we have to raise all our own funds to support local people with learning disabilities, so cannot afford to continue supporting a shop that is not making a profit,” she said.

“We’re really sad that it was not possible for the Watford shop to make a profit but it’s some consolation that at least we gave it a really good try.

“It’s sad news about the shop but we’re hoping for good things to come – we’re going to give it a good shot.

“We’d like to thank our wonderful staff and volunteers for all their hard work and support.”

A closing down sale is being held between now and closing time on Wednesday, June 14, to raise as much last-minute cash as possible.

Mencap Watford’s other charity shop in Bushey High Street will remain open, while plans are in place to open a community café in Watford Central Library later this year.
