An unruly maths teacher has been banned indefinitely from teaching for watching porn in school and threatening pupils.

Paul Stanbury, 51, who taught at Aldenham School, Elstree from September 1995 – September 2016 admitted he was guilty of “unacceptable professional conduct” and apologised for his actions.

The final confrontation came in June 2016 when Mr Stanbury pushed a pupil and threatened to destroy his earphones after telling some to “piss off” while covering a PE lesson.

Mr Stanbury continued to teach at the boarding school where fees can be more than £10,000 a term until the end of the school year an led a week-long residential trip for 28 pupils.

A disciplinary hearing was held on September 8, 2016 and Mr Stanbury was dismissed from September 9.

He received a warning for watching pornography on a school computer in 2014 while covering a lesson, despite receiving a warning for the same offence seven years earlier in 2007.

The teacher also received a police caution for an assault in the Century Retail Park in Watford in 2013.

He was found guilty of “unacceptable professional conduct” by a panel from the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) in Coventry, in a hearing on Monday, May 22.

However Mr Stanbury could be able to teach again after two years if he successfully appeals the ban and a panel deem him fit to teach.

Deputy NCTL director, Alan Meyrick, agreed with the ruling and decided to allow Mr Stanbury to appeal in two years because of his apology and positive comments from the head teacher of Aldenham School.

Head teacher James Fowler said: “During an incident in June 2016 Mr Stanbury had an altercation with a pupil, which led to an allegation of assault. The incident was immediately reported to the School Principal.

“The school undertook an investigation into the allegation and held a subsequent disciplinary hearing.

“At that hearing it was found that Mr Stanbury’s conduct was gross misconduct under the Disciplinary Procedure and Mr Stanbury was dismissed.”
