Politicians are divided on the best way to save a centre that looks after the most vulnerable people in the county.

The Mayor of Watford, councillors and the MP have all come out to voice their disagreement to close Nascot Lawn Respite Centre on October 31.

MP for Watford Richard Harrington wrote to the Herts Valley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Chairman Dr Nicholas Small to ask him to rethink the decision.

The Herts Valley CCG have announced the cuts to save the £60,000 currently spent on the facility as part of the £45 million they have been asked to save by NHS England.

However, Labour councillor Asif Khan is demanding that Mr Harrington use his power to lobby the Department of Health and the Treasury to find the money to keep the service open.

He said: “This issue goes beyond political lines, but Richard Harrington needs to do more than what he is doing as it is his government forcing the CCG to save money.

“He needs to bang on the door his colleagues in government and make them find the money, as it is not good enough to blame the CCG.

“If the Conservative government the managed to find £1 billion for the DUP. The money for this centre is a drop in the ocean.”

Cllr Khan has a motion to be discussed by Watford Borough Council, which has been seconded by Labour councillor responsible for children’s services Nigel Bell.

As well as lobbying Mr Harrington, Cllr Khan proposes that he contact other Hertfordshire MPs about the closure, and ensure that no further cuts are made to health services in the county.
