A school disco in memory of George Michael has so far raised more than £3,000 for charity.

The party, organised by the George Michael Appreciation Society of Bushey, was held at Bushey Meads School, Coldharbour Lane last Saturday.

The midsummer bash was held to commemorate the late singer’s birthday on June 25, but could not be held the weekend before due to exams.

Society founder Tracey Wills said: “Some events don’t live up to expectation, but this disco was even better than I thought it would be.

“There was no trouble. It was very emotional, there were tears but there was laughter as well.

“Sunday was like the day after you wedding, you’ve prepared for it for so long and been excited and then it is gone in a flash.”

The tickets sold out quickly and the society has become a place for people to share their admiration of the former Wham! singer following his death on Christmas day last year.

A large portion of the money will go towards repairing the 1st Bushey Scouts Hut, which is the first place that the icon performed.

A percentage of cash raised will also go to the Terence Higgins Trust, the charity that campaigns for people suffering with HIV too have equal rights, a cause George Michael advocated in his life.

On the society’s Facebook page people from as far as Australia, Switzerland and the USA have announced they would be attending the celebration.

DJ Pete Barker compiled a playlist of the singer’s hits more than five-and-a-half hours long for guests to enjoy.

A screen projecting images of the legend was rolling throughout the night, as tuck shop and a bar that had to be restocked three times provided refreshments.

The group have grown in popularity since it was set up, and were responsible for setting up the first public funeral for the singer at St James’ Church, Bushey in May.

They were mentioned on the Facebook page of George Michael impersonator Wayne Dilks and when he performed at The Alban Arena last Friday there were invited back stage to meet him.

The next event planned by the society will be a dinner and dance at Christmas.
