The Mayor of Watford has said she will “not let go” of plans for a new station in Watford despite a lack of funding after Sadiq Khan dropped the project from his Met Line Extension proposals for a second time.

Dorothy Thornhill confirmed work is still ongoing on the potential station in Vicarage Road, as part of the £284 million Met Line Extension development, which looks to connect the Metropolitan Line in Croxley to several new stations across Watford.

London Underground and Watford Borough Council recently submitted plans outlining amendments to the design and layout of the new rail line, including the introduction of new “back of house” escape routes to the north and south of the station.

However, there is an uncertainty whether the project will go ahead as although previous Mayor of London Boris Johnson put forward £49 million, TfL cost projections show that a further £50 million will be required before construction work can begin.

Elected Mayor Dorothy Thornhill said she has held various meetings in a bid to “hammer out” a solution.

She said: “I firmly believe the MLX extension will be going ahead. Clearly there continue to be challenges to overcome, which I am pressing on. I have not let go.

“This has both cross-party and partnership agreement. Businesses have invested millions in Watford on the back of it. I have held positive meetings with the Chair of the London Assembly Transport Committee Caroline Pidgeon MLA, with Richard Harrington MP and with business and council leaders.

“Richard Harrington MP is meeting with the Treasury. There is a deal to be hammered out. I will share the news as soon as there is some.”

A Department for Transport spokesperson added: “Croxley Rail Link will deliver significant transport benefits and significantly boost economic growth in Watford and the wider north-west London area.

“We wrote to the Mayor in January saying that we expect Transport for London to take forward the scheme in line with the agreements put in place in 2015. This remains our position.”

Richard Harrington said he is meeting Sadiq Khan in two weeks to discuss the plans.
