A sign warning lorry drivers about a low bridge has been obscured by overgrown bushes.

The sign in Radlett Road, Watford, also notifies drivers of a weight limit on the road ahead.

Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst, who managed to get the hedge trimmed back last year after complaining directly to Ringway – Hertfordshire County Council’s highways contractor – said drivers failing to see these warnings could have serious consequences.

“If missed, there are no other signs warning high-sided vehicle drivers until you get to the bridge,” he said.

Cllr Giles-Medhurst said the county council had shirked responsibility for the sign and wrongly informed him that it was instead the responsibility of Watford Borough Council.

He added: “Last year I had Ringway cut it back after complaining directly, and pointed out the bushes would grow back.

“This is clearly a highways sign, not a borough one as claimed. Do Ringway staff need to be retested to tell the difference?”

Kevin Carrol, divisional manager at Ringway, said: "We are aware of recent local concern with a directional sign in Radlett Road being obscured.

"Works to reduce the vegetation that is obscuring it is in our programme.

"We work in close liaison with Watford Borough council to address issues with overgrown trees and vegetation across the borough."
