The MP for Watford praised an annual Jobs Fair for helping people in the town to “change their lives”.

Richard Harrington and David Gauke, the MP for South West Hertfordshire, welcomed thousands of people to the sixth fair at the Langley Banqueting Suites, in Watford High Street, on Friday, September 1.

The day-long event linked more than 60 Watford companies with vacancies to people in the area looking for a new job or hoping to develop their employment skills further.

Some of the businesses included Warner Bros, John Lewis, Apple, Hilton, ASOS, The Peace Hospice, Specsavers and there was even the chance to work as a prison guard at The Mount.

There were also a range of seminars and workshops running throughout the day, which provided advice on social media training, CV and interview tips, and mock interview practice.

Mr Harrington believes the fair is helping more people find work each year.

He said: “We’re providing real jobs for real people at the Job Fair.

“There’s so much on offer for people looking for work today, including training and a huge number of jobs.

“I’m hoping this will help change people’s lives.”

Mr Gauke added: “The day was really good and positive - congratulations to everyone involved.

“There are so many jobs available but it also about keeping your life on track and learning a new skillset.”

Alexander Nicoll, the director at Watford’s intu shopping centre, called the fair a “really uplifting event”.

He said: “I think it was the best job fair yet. It was also a great way for intu to showcase just how much it helps the community in terms of providing jobs to local people.

“We are creating new jobs all the time in retail and hospitality and want them to go to people in the area.

“A lot of people who have attended the event today are already in employment but are looking to develop their skills and that is a very positive thing. We are pleased to be part of it, as it is a really uplifting event.”

Aisling Pinchin works for the British Airways airline but also volunteers at the Princes Trust charity to help people gain confidence and improve their CV in order to become more employable.

She was also full of praise: “This was my first jobs fair and I loved it.

“Stuff like this really helps people get back into work.

“If you have no idea what you want to do, the Princes Trust will help you find your talents by looking through your CV and help you find your confidence.”
