The largest solar flare in a decade hit the Earth earlier this week, making the Northern Lights visible as far south as Edinburgh last night (Thursday).

However experts think the solar storm could get even stronger tonight, with Lancaster University’s Aurorawatch issuing a red alert stating: “It is likely that aurora will be visible by eye and camera from anywhere in the UK.”

Watford Observer:

So it’s possible, although certainly not guaranteed, that you could see this stunning show in the sky tonight. For the best chance, you will need to get to a dark spot away from streetlights on a clear night and look north.

Aurora Borealis is a natural light display predominately seen in the Arctic regions, produced when solar winds react with the Earth’s magnetosphere.
