Hungry motorists are damaging their cars on enormous speed bumps recently installed at a popular fast food restaurant, it has been claimed.

The McDonald's outlet near Asda in St Albans Road has just reopened following an extensive refurbishment.

However it seems that the new speed bumps are not a tasty prospect, with many customers stating they had scraped the underside of their car when driving over the obstacles.

Stephen Edwards pulled into the restaurant on Friday for a quick bite to eat when he was faced with the concrete terrors.

As he gingerly drove over one, it crashed against the bottom of his Honda Civic Type R, dislodging the bumper.

“They were so high it was unbelievable. As I went over one I heard a massive thud,” he said.

“I asked to speak to the manager and he said ‘is it about the speed bumps?’, so it’s obviously a problem.”

Mr Edwards has since posted about his misfortune on Facebook group Spotted Watford, with his experiences being echoed by several other diners.

He added: “The amount of comments I got was ridiculous. So many people had the same thing. Even people’s work vans are having the same problem.

“I went in for a quarter pounder and ended up with a one hundred pounder.”

Another customer, Matthew Hunt, said his car had also been scraped by the speed bumps, despite exercising utmost care when driving over them.

“The speed bumps that have been put in are very high,” he said.

“I drove in extremely slowly and I heard a loud scrape under my car. On the next bump I stopped the car and eased the car over the speed bump to see if it would happen again - loud scrape.

“I informed the assistant manager who apologised. She said she was sorry and that they are aware of the problem due to a high number of complaints.”

A McDonald's spokesperson said: “Our restaurant on St Albans Road reopened on Thursday last week after an extensive refurbishment, with changes including the addition of speedbumps in the car park.

"Whilst height of the speedbumps follows industry guidelines, we plan to reduce the size of the speedbumps early this week following feedback from our customers.”
