A prominent politician has congratulated a councillor on his recent by-election win.

Jeremy Corbyn MP tweeted his Jeremy Newmark on winning the Borehamwood Kenilworth seat on Thursday.

The leader of the Labour Party tweeted: “Congratulations @Jeremy_Newmark on winning Borehamwood Kenilworth from the Tories yesterday. Fantastic result for Labour and Hertfordshire.”

Mr Newmark the seat from the Conservative Party after Thomas Ash triggered the by-election by handing in his resignation in August due to work commitments.

Speaking to The Jewish Chronicle Mr Newmark said: “I am delighted with this result. It shows that there are no no-go areas for Labour.

“I am looking forward to working to get a better deal for the residents of Borehamwood.

“I am particularly grateful to my local constituency and branch Labour parties whose dedication and commitment enabled me to contest this seat whilst observing Succot without compromise."

The by-election was triggered by Thomas Ash handing in his resignation due to work commitments in August.

The tightly fought contest saw Mr Newmark, the chairman of Jewish Labour Movement win 383 (37.8 per cent) votes against former Mayor of Hertsmere Pat Strack for the Conservative Party who received 341 (33.7 per cent) of the votes.

Elaine Elliman for the Liberal Democrats won 144 votes, independent candidate Lawrence Strack received 91 votes, and UKIP candidate Vikki Johnson got 54 votes.

He will join Cllr Victor Ami to represent Kenilworth in Hertsmere Borough Council.
