Work has begun on fitting the new glass dome roof on the “impressive” new intu Watford extension.

Much of the steel structure of the new building, which will cover the former Charter Place site in central Watford, is now in place.

Subject to good weather, the glass roof will be fitted in December. The extension is due to open in August 2018.

The development will bring several big name stores to the high street, including Debenhams and Superdry outlets.

It will also include a new cinema with an IMAX high-definition screen, together with a ten pin bowling alley.

Deputy mayor Peter Taylor said: “This will be an impressive building. It is a big vote of confidence in Watford that this scheme that the council has worked on with the developers is going ahead when many other towns have struggled to attract investment.

“It will mean hundreds of extra jobs for local people, and at least 15 new retailers."

Watford Council, working alongside Hertfordshire County Council, is set to make improvements to the high street in time for the opening of the expanded centre.

It is hoped these changes will make the town centre more attractive and pedestrian friendly.
