Bereaved parents used Diwali as an opportunity to promote allergy awareness in temples.

Lakshmi Kaul and Vinod Tikoo launched their campaign to promote allergy at Bhaktevidanta Manor in Aldenham on Sunday.

In May, the couple's nine-year-old daughter Nainika Tikoo died after suffering an allergic reaction to blackberries the first time she ate them.

Nainika had an allergy to dairy products which meant that she was not able to eat any of the food when attending temple.

Now in her memory, her parents are working with the Food Standards Agency and Allergies UK to raise awareness of how dangerous allergies can be.

They are providing temple volunteers with a 10 point checklist to help them ensure their food is clearly labelled and not contaminated by other allergens.

Mother Lakshmi Kaul said: "As I was turning off Nainika's respirator, I thought of all of the children who must be at risk from this as well.

"Nainika could not eat anything from the temple because there would be traces of dairy in it.

"It is all about making simple changes. Having red tape makes it harder for volunteers.

""We want to try and make temples 100 per cent allergy safe..
