More than 100 new cycle spaces will be provided at Watford Junction train station once the latest raft of changes come into effect.

A two-tier bike shelter and four new cycle stands were recently installed at the side of the station, meaning there are now 58 secure spaces as opposed to 20.

London Midland plans to install another 104 spaces by building a cycle hub which will be part-funded by Watford Borough Council.

The new structure will be located on the former platform five of the station, and will be protected by specially-installed CCTV cameras and lighting.

Once both of these structures are complete, there will be 142 new cycle spaces for commuters at Watford Junction, bringing the total to 324.

Cllr Iain Sharpe, responsible for regeneration and development, said: “We want everyone to get out of their cars and onto their bikes. It’s more environmentally friendly, it’ll improve your health, and you won’t have to pay for parking.

He added: “These spaces will make it easier for more people to use their bikes, so we are very happy to be involved in this project with our partners at London Midland.”
