Pupils from more than 15 primary schools across the Three Rivers District joined forces to help relaunch a youth council.

More than 30 students representing different school councils gathered at the Penn Chambers in Three Rivers House on October 12 to debate issues regarding playgrounds, parking and elderly people.

Other topics included the way the council functions and makes decisions, along with the role of councillors.

The students will now choose projects to undertake themselves before returning again to the chamber in a few months to show different Three Rivers councillors the results.

Cllr Alex Michaels, who represents Gade Valley, said the aim of the youth council is to help young people “play a more active role in society”.

He said: “I was delighted to see such enthusiastic and bright students being so engaged and interested in debating, listening and talking about these service areas and ultimately taking the information back to their schools to start their own projects.

“Most importantly, voting will empower them and getting them to think about what role they can play, and how they can do this better than us and how as a society to can be open and tolerant. They learn to work together, integrate and build.”

Cllr Reena Ranger, who represents the Moor Park & Eastbury ward, added: “It was delightful to see a full chamber, full of ideas and enthusiasm with students thoughtfully engaged in assessing different projects with such interest.

“I hope that each pupil involved will see their positive contribution and its impact, not only at school, but also in the wider community and feel deservedly proud of it.”
