No prisoners will face charges over the two day disturbance at a Hertfordshire jail in which prison officers were reported to have lost control.

Riot-trained officers were sent to HMP The Mount, near Bovingdon, after armed inmates took over a wing and smashed windows on July 31 and August 1.

Hertfordshire Police have now said it has “exhausted all lines of enquiry” and no charges will be brought.

A Hertfordshire Constabulary spokesperson said: “It was reported to police that between midday and 10pm on Monday, July 31, prisoners threatened prison officers and caused damage to the prison over a period of approximately 10 hours. It was also reported that on Tuesday, August 1, a prisoner was assaulted by two inmates.

“All avenues of enquiry have been fully explored by officers, including CCTV footage.

“At this stage we however, if any further information comes to light it will be fully investigated.”

The category C jail near Hemel Hempstead houses male prisoners and was opened in 1987.

It is said to hold more than 1,000 prisoners nearing the end of their sentences and who live close-by.
