Volunteers braved freezing temperatures by sleeping outdoors to help raise £50,000 for homeless people.

The Imagine Property Group and New Hope charity held a Big Sleepout event at Fullerians Rugby Club, in Coningesby Drive, Watford, on Friday November 17.

165 brave individuals give up their warm beds and double glazing to spend a night gazing at the stars and trying to keep warm in beds made from cardboard in a bid to understand what it means to be homeless.

Volunteer Seamus said: “if you’re homeless and on the streets, no-one has it worse than you. The Big Imagine Sleepout helped me to understand the work of New Hope and the money raised will truly help deliver one thing people need in life, hope.”

New Hope aims to help people who are sleeping rough or livening in temporary accommodation by providing accommodation and skills to get people back on their feet.

Sam Weightman, community and events fundraiser for New Hope, said: “It was amazing to see so many people give their time, and their comfort, in support of the work we do at New Hope.

“Although only a brief window into the lives of those experiencing homelessness, I feel it was a humbling experience for all involved and the money they raised will have a huge impact on the lives of the people with whom we work.

“I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all who took part, the corporate groups who sponsored the event and say a huge thanks to Imagine Property Group, who have been 100 per cent behind this new event.”

Mike Cole, the managing director at Imagine, added: “The event has resonated with people from all walks of life as so many people have got involved in the event and also donated.

“Nobody was looking forward to it as we knew it had to be uncomfortable in order to persuade people to sponsor you.

“We realise this event does not represent the struggles homeless people face every day but at least it is a step towards trying to make a difference.”

Deputy mayor Peter Taylor also took part and said: “Last year I did the rough sleeper count with New Hope and it really brought home the reality of homelessness in our town.

“There are two reasons why I’m taking part. Firstly, I want to raise money and secondly, to remember those who have no choice. It’s a terrible situation.’
