A mother who had her car door damaged as she was taking her child out of her car is calling for her road to be made safer.

Jo Coffer, who lives in Windmill Lane in Bushey Heath, says “inconsiderate drivers” are

making the road dangerous and has called for traffic calming measures on the narrow street, especially after another recent crash.

Ms Coffer’s car was involved in a hit and run on an evening last month, causing £400 worth of damage.

“People simply do not drive with care down Windmill Lane. It is a very straight road where it is easy to pick up speed. I was actually quite lucky it wasn’t worse. They didn’t stop,” she said.

“What would have happened if someone was actually getting out the front passenger seat?” she added.

On November 27, Ms Coffer saw the aftermath of a crash that took place at the junction of Trundlers Way and Windmill Lane, the second smash she has seen in the same place.

Drivers have also raised concerns over another junction on the road at Windmill Street which is considered to be a “blind spot” for motorists turning onto the lane.

Calls for a mirror to aid drivers have been made.

Ms Coffer added: “Action needs to be taken one way or the other down Windmill Lane in particular. Slowing the traffic down with bumps and adding mirrors at junctions would create more safety for the residents.”

Adam Dvorkin, 40, uses Windmill Lane every day.

He said: “Safety measures are definitely needed. A mirror at the junction is a must. It won’t stop speeding but it will warn drivers pulling out that there is a car approaching.

“It’s an easy, cheap solution. Something has to be done before someone gets killed.”

Residents discussing the issue on Facebook have suggested a number of other solutions to the issue, including speed bumps, turning the road into a one way street, creating a lower speed limit, or even turning Windmill Lane into a cul-de-sac up until the junction of Windmill Street.

A Hertfordshire County Council spokesperson said: “We were saddened to hear of these incidents and we would like to reassure residents that road safety is of paramount importance to Hertfordshire County Council.

“This junction has not been identified as a site for investigation through our annual review of collision sites in the county or for any treatment as part of the county council’s Integrated Works Programme. However, we encourage residents to speak to their local county councillor to raise any concerns they may have.”
