A council investigation has found no sign of damage or drug use in a park.

Concerns about potential drug use and damage to play equipment in Riverside Recreation Ground raised in the Watford Observer last week were investigated by Watford Borough Council, Hertfordshire Constabulary and Veolia.

Park rangers are now carrying out daily patrols of the park and the council says only a small bench was found to have been burnt, and will be replaced in the next few weeks.

Cllr Peter Taylor said: “I was very concerned by this report as making sure our parks are safe and great places for our children to play is an absolute priority.

"Any reports that people have been misusing them are taken extremely seriously, which is why I had this investigated quickly. I was gratified to find that there were no significant safety concerns but have asked for inspections to be stepped up to daily to stamp out any issues before they escalate.

“I would also want to reassure our residents that the council’s partner, Veolia, and the police regularly patrol Watford’s parks to ensure they are safe for our children to enjoy.

"We’ve invested £4.8 million in improving Watford’s parks and play areas, and we are committed to maintaining their quality and safety. They are one of our town’s best loved and most-used assets and we intend to keep them that way.

“I urge local people to report any issues directly to Veolia, and they will be dealt with urgently. Simply email enquiries.watford@veolia.co.uk or call 020 3567 6900. If you see any illegal or suspicious activity, please report it to the police immediately.”
