A new housing development that is part of the London Living Rent scheme is set to open its doors to its first tenants.

Le Bon Court, in St John’s Road, Harrow, was unveiled at a ceremony attended by council figures and representatives from the Greater London Assembly.

Made up of 27 one and two bedroom apartments, the site is part of the Mayor of London’s plan to introduce more affordable housing into the capital.

Harrow Council leader, Sachin Shah, said: “Here's another great example of Harrow meeting the affordable housing challenge.

“Having a nice place to call home, at a rent that’s manageable, has such a positive impact on people’s lives.

“These are great new homes and I’m delighted that Harrow residents have been given priority.”

It is the borough’s first set of homes under the London Living Rent programme.

Introduced by Sadiq Khan, the initiative sees rents placed at a third of the average household incomes. This gives renters the chance to save for a deposit on a shared ownership home.

At this development, 23 properties will be offered under the London Living Rent scheme.

These have been offered to Harrow residents who can rent on assured shorthold tenancies of up to 18 months, with the option to renew for a further three years.

The remaining properties will be available for affordable rent and the tenants are expected to move in by March.

James Murray, Deputy Mayor for housing and residential development, said: “I am delighted that residents in Harrow are now benefitting from one of the Mayor’s key manifesto commitments to make renting more affordable so people can save for a deposit.

“Fixing the capital’s housing crisis is a marathon not a sprint, and the Government will need to play its part, but this shows what a difference Sadiq is making already by offering Londoners an alternative to the private rented sector and providing genuinely affordable homes at lower rents.”

Each apartment in Le Bon Court has private outdoor space and hold “contemporary” designs. As a green development, it has cycle storage and residents are encouraged to use public transport.

Helen Evans, chief executive of housing association Network Homes, said she was delighted to be part of bringing this scheme to Harrow.
