A woman was taken to court for failing to pay four years’ worth of council tax.

Sagarr Ngum of Whippendell Road, Watford, was recently taken to St Albans Magistrates Court due to owing £6,563.22.

Watford Borough Council tried to engage with Ms Ngum in a whole range of ways in order to resolve the outstanding arrears.

However, legal action was taken when she repeatedly failed to pay any of the money owed.

Cllr Mark Watkin, who is responsible for Resources and Customer Service, said: “Watford residents are given every opportunity to work with us when they face difficulties in paying their council tax.

“Unfortunately, there are cases where some people have the resources but refuse to pay. In these cases, we have no option but to take people to court to secure the debt.

“It is not fair that the rest of the community subsidise their payments and we will take action against people who exploit the system.”
