Players from the past came together to celebrate the life of a club legend with a charity match.

Two teams battled it out at the Bedmond sports and social club for the Max Spur Memorial Cup on February 17.

Max Spur was a former player, secretary, chairman, and was serving president of the club, which plays in Toms Lane, Bedmond, after the club was reformed in 1946.

Mr Spur died on September 22 at the age of 84.

Bedmond Legends beat the Bedmond Old Boys 5-1 in the match which raised more than £1,000 for Children’s Cancer Research UK, a charity close to Mr Spur’s heart. It was also an opportunity to raise awareness for grassroots football.

Three hundred people came along to the game which was organised by managers Steve Toms and Glyn Spur as well as Simon Phillips and Jim Harrison.

A minutes silence was also held before the game for Seamus Byrne, who died at the age of 53 on February 10. Mr Byrne lived in Bedmond all his life and was a former player for Sunday league side Bedmond Onlys.
