How is it possible that ‘many consider the Elizabeth Line to be Sadiq Khan’s crowning jewel’ (Comment, 9 March)?

He has had very little to do with it. It was the previous Labour Government which gave the final go ahead to Crossrail, and to run as far west as Maidenhead. It was then the Conservative Government who finally agreed to push it as far as Reading. Boris Johnson was then Mayor.

Mr Khan is not spending millions of London taxpayers’ money as the project has been backed by central government.

However, I agree with you that we definitely need the Metropolitan Line Extension for better connections to and from Watford. There is no justification for cancelling it with all the money apparently in place. If the Elizabeth Line can go from Essex to Berkshire, there is no reason why a small extension to the Metropolitan Line in Herts can be regarded as unreasonable.

Another important point to make is that while Mr Khan is against the MLX, he is now pushing hard for funds for Crossrail 2 which will run from Surrey to Herts, both outside London!

If ever built, this line would also help travellers to go about their business to and from central London.

Mr Khan, make up your mind.
